MCPHERSON PUBLIC LIBRARY: Shades of Grey by Jon Flory Schrock in the gallery March1 through April 26.

E

Mcpherson Public Library recently issued the following announcement.

A collection of drawings and polyhedra titled Shades of Grey will be on display in the gallery from Sunday, March 1 until April 26.

The rhythms, designs, and patterns of Africa and the Middle East are a major influence in the work of Jon Flory Schrock, both in his drawings and polyhedra. The show breaks new ground for the library gallery, including three-dimensional polyhedral, which is defined as an object with many plane faces, typically more than six. It is a show that is a product of pen, ink, and workshop tools.

“Experimenting with techniques needed for using ink as well as experiences I had in Africa and the Middle East introduced me to Islamic design and patterns,” states Flory Schrock, “Although I never considered myself a mathematician in school, I enjoyed geometry. That and Islamic patterns led me to polyhedra. Combining those with interests in recycling and repurposing led me to experiment with making polyhedra models out of a variety of materials that might otherwise have been thrown away.”

Schrock graduated in 1994 from Manchester College in Indiana, with a BA in Philosophy and Religion. He lives in McPherson and work at Clayworks.
