On October 12th, 2022, students from Central Christian College of Kansas attended a 2 hour facility tour of Milacron, one of the local manufacturers of McPherson, Kansas. A company supporting over 10,000 employees across the nation, Milacron, is one of the leaders in industrial strength screw production. The students were treated to a brief history lesson regarding the company and some of the applications of the products Milacron produces and the process the raw material take to become the final product. As well as learning about the repair process of broken or used products returned to Milacron.
Our main facility tour guide, Central Christian College alumni Joel Lawrence (CC’96), then led the students through the maze of hardware and CNC machines that were primarily responsible for the production of industrial screws. Through the keen eye of a couple students, they inquired about a covered area within the facility. This covered area served as the housing unit for a quality control system that utilized laser mapping. The students were then shown in real time the mapping process to make sure the specifications were up to the standard the client ordered. Additionally, the students were given a demonstration of the custom made gear boxes that were assembled on-site to support the screws rotational potential within the manufacturing world, as well as a glimpse of the repair process for such screws when pushed beyond their limits. Between welding, grinding, polishing, and quality control, HR representative Alisa had this to say, “As long as students come with an eagerness to learn, a good attitude, and a good work ethic it’s a great place to learn transferable skills or begin a career.”
This tour was organized by the Briner Academic Center as part of Manufacturing Professionals Week. Students had the opportunity to sign up for multiple tours, one of the many ways the Briner Academic Center provides resources for student success and career opportunities.
