Imperial Press: The Nick Geankoplis Show Opens At The Mingenback Art Center Gallery

The Bethany College Department of Art presents Imperial Press: Nick Geankoplis Show. One privileged white, cis-het dudes' artistic rumination on Sino-Western complexities. The exhibit opened Monday, Jan. 16 through Feb. 17 at the Mingenback Art Center Gallery on the corner of Olsson and Second Street on the Bethany College campus.

Geankoplis, who is currently an assistant professor of art at Kansas State University, lived and worked in China for four years which greatly shaped this exhibit. “In the Tea & Coffee and Saccharine Series, Chinese factory produced decals made for ceramic tableware are taken and collaged with hobby craft decals from America and Europe. Using formal cues from Chinese landscape paintings, the partially inferable, semi-nonsensical narrative minuets of Western and Chinese patterns, kitsch, and relic, are re-contextualized in proximity to one another leaving them feeling familiar and yet foreign,” explains Geankoplis.

“Through this exhibition, students will see alternative methods to creating ceramic artwork and how to integrate life experiences into their art. In addition, our Art Professional Practices class will help with the installation as they learn gallery practices,” explains Rebecca Vega, Assistant Professor of Art.

Admission is free and open to the public.
